look for the small arrows inside the links,
they show you which way to push the pins out to resize

 

 

set the tool in place, making sure the pin lines up, push carefully in the marked direction to avoid breaking or bending the pin

 

 

 

after removing the right number of links, push the pin back in the same way it came out. If it sticks out a bit, use the tool again to press it in all the way
